Gulp – The “World’s Largest” Stop Motion Animation

In order to demonstrate the capabilities of the Nokia N8 phone, Nokia commissioned the creation of a stop motion spot. Filmed outdoors on a beach over a span of 5 days, the largest scene in the video broke a Guinness world record for “world’s largest stop animation set.” Sumo Science (consisting of Ed Patterson and Will Studd), director of photography Toby Howell and Wardley, as well as a large team of sand artists and animation students all worked together to bring the scene to life. By using the phone’s photo capabilities rather than relying on its video capture, the team was able to create a high-quality finished product.
In the second video, you can see the behind-the-scenes action as well as all the preparation needed for such a large project. Storyboards showcase how each scene was planned out, and the footage also demonstrates the importance of lighting and precision in each scene.
Welcome!
